What is therapy, and how can it help me?
Therapy, or counseling, is a collaborative process between a trained professional and an individual, couple, family, or group. The primary goal of therapy is to provide support and guidance to help you overcome challenges, gain insight into your thoughts and behaviors, and ultimately improve your emotional health and well-being.
Therapy is a personalized journey that focuses on your unique needs and goals. It is a process of self-discovery and growth, providing you with tools and insights to lead a more fulfilling and balanced life. It’s essential to approach therapy with an open mind, actively participate, and build a trusting relationship with your therapist to maximize its benefits.
Therapy can help you in various ways:
Emotional Support: Therapy provides a safe and confidential space to express your thoughts and feelings without judgment. The therapist offers empathy and understanding, helping you navigate through difficult emotions.
Insight and Self-Exploration: Therapists assist clients in exploring and gaining insight into their thoughts, behaviors, and patterns. This self-exploration can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and the factors contributing to challenges.
Coping Strategies: Therapists teach practical coping skills to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, or other challenges. These skills empower you to navigate life’s difficulties more effectively.
Improved Relationships: In couples or family therapy, therapists focus on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and building healthier relationships. Individual therapy can also address patterns that affect relationships.
Goal-Setting and Achievement: Therapy helps you set realistic and achievable goals for personal development, relationship improvement, and other areas of your life. Collaboratively working with your therapist, you can make progress toward these goals.
Increased Self-Esteem and Confidence: Therapy can promote a positive self-image by fostering self-acceptance and enhancing self-esteem. You may develop greater confidence in your abilities as you better understand yourself.
Trauma Processing and Healing: For individuals who have experienced trauma, therapy offers a structured and supportive environment for processing and healing. Therapists use evidence-based techniques to help you cope with and overcome the effects of trauma.
Decision-Making Support: If you’re facing difficult decisions, therapy provides a space to explore your options, weigh the pros and cons, and clarify your values and priorities.
Life Transitions and Adjustment: Whether experiencing a significant life change, such as a career shift or a divorce, therapy can provide guidance and support as you navigate the challenges and adjustments that come with change.
What type of concerns do you typically address?
I work with clients facing a range of different issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, life adjustments, relationship difficulties, and concerns related to being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
I help people struggling with what many call “imposter syndrome,” when a client has persistent thoughts of being inferior and a “fraud” in what they do at work and in their private lives. These thoughts generally lead to depression and anxiety, as well as low self-esteem.
I work with LGBTQ+ people who experience a range of different issues, including those related to exploring one’s identity, coming out, family and relationship dynamics, loneliness, and discrimination.
I also help clients adjust to significant life changes, such as a career shift or a divorce, and provide guidance and support as they navigate the challenges and adjustments that come with change.
I do all this in a safe and supportive environment where clients feel welcome and comfortable being themselves openly.
What type of clients do you see?
I work with individual adult clients from many different backgrounds and needs.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
How often do I need to come for sessions, and how long do they last?
Sessions typically start as weekly meetings at scheduled appointment times. Over time, as you improve and symptoms lessen, we will perhaps adjust those sessions to less frequent meetings.
Sessions last 50 to 55 minutes.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
The duration of therapy varies greatly from person to person and depends on several factors. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how long therapy will take, as the nature of the issues addressed, personal goals, the client’s commitment to the therapeutic process, and the therapeutic approach used all influence the process.
It’s important to understand that therapy is a collaborative process, and together, we should decide when to end therapy. Some individuals may benefit from short-term, solution-focused therapy to address specific concerns, while others may find long-term therapy helpful for ongoing personal development and self-discovery.
